Piperacillin & Tazobactam injection is used to treat pneumonia and skin, gynaecological, and abdominal (stomach area) infections caused by bacteria. Piperacillin is a penicillin antibiotic drug. It destroys bacteria that cause infection. Tazobactam is a class of drugs known as beta-lactamase inhibitors.
How does Piperacillin & Tazobactam injection work?
- Piperacillin & Tazobactam injection is a combination of two medications: Piperacillin and Tazobactam. Piperacillin is an antibiotic drug. Piperacillin inhibits the formation of the bacterial protective layer, which is essential for bacteria’s survival. Tazobactum is a beta-lactamase inhibitor that reduces resistance and enhances the action of Piperacillin on bacteria.
- Antibiotics such as Piperacillin & Tazobactam injection will not cure a cold, flu, or other viruses. If antibiotics are not necessary, they will not make your infection improve and might even make it worse.
What Special Precautions Should I take?
- Inform your doctor and pharmacist if you are taking or plan to take other prescription or nonprescription medication, vitamins, nutritional supplements, and herbal products while using Piperacillin & Tazobactam injection. Your doctor may have to change your drug doses or monitor you closely for side effects.
- You should know that Piperacillin & Tazobactam injection may decrease the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives (birth control pills, patches, rings, and injections). You will need to use some other type of birth control to prevent pregnancy when you are taking Piperacillin & Tazobactam injection
- Talk to your doctor about other ways to prevent pregnancy while you take this medication.
- Tell your doctor if you have or have ever had cystic fibrosis (a genetic disorder that affects breathing, digestion, and reproduction) or kidney disease.
- If you are pregnant, become pregnant, or plan to become pregnant while using Piperacillin & Tazobactam injection, tell your doctor.
What Are The Side Effects?
Side effects of Piperacillin & Tazobactam injection can occur. Tell your physician if any of these effects are severe or if they do not go away:
- Diarrhea
- Constipation
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Heartburn
- Stomach Discomfort
- Fever
- Headache
- Pain in the Mouth
- Difficulty Falling Asleep or Sleeping
What Else Should I know?
- Keep all scheduled appointments with your doctor and with the laboratory.
- Your doctor will order some laboratory tests to see how your body responds to Piperacillin & Tazobactam injection.
- Tell your doctor and the laboratory technician before any lab test is performed that you are taking Piperacillin & Tazobactam injection.
- If you are diabetic, Piperacillin & Tazobactam injection can affect some urine tests and cause a false result. You should discuss the use of other glucose tests during Piperacillin & Tazobactam injection treatment with your doctor.
- Keep a written list of all of the prescription and over-the-counter (over-the-counter) medications, vitamins, minerals, and herbal supplements you are taking. Bring the list with you to see a doctor or when you are admitted to a hospital. You should have the list in case of emergencies as well.
